TIFF is now accepting entries for the Battle of the Scores competition (BotS). High-energy, high-profile and unique, BotS showcases youth music and film talent by challenging high-school bands to create and perform original scores for an original short film. The competition is live, and a winner is determined by audience votes and a panel of esteemed judges from the Toronto music and film community.

digiPlaySpace

digiPlaySpace is an interactive exhibition for ages 3 through 13 taking place February-April, 2017. In 2016 over the course of seven weeks, 19,000 children, family members and educators visited digiPlaySpace and embarked on interactive adventures filled with laughing, learning and engagement with media technologies, art installations, learning-centric games and mobile apps.

digiPlaySpace will be held from March-April, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Submissions Deadlines

Final deadline for submissions is September 5, 2016.  Early submission is recommended. TIFF is entitled to make decisions earlier than the deadline and is not obligated to consider late entries.

Fees

There is no submission fee.

Eligibility & Evaluation

TIFF is seeking fun, educational, family friendly artworks, games and other digital media experiences, including but not limited to: 

  • multi-user interactive projection pieces;
  • multi-player videogames and interactive play installations (screen based and non-screen-based);
  • digital creative tools;
  • hands-on experiences that showcase innovative media interfaces and/or interaction techniques (e.g. driven by gestural, thought-controlled and other unconventional inputs)
  • Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and other immersive visualization experiences;
  • "DIY Maker" experiences, technologies and toys, robotics, creative circuits, 3D printing/ modeling activities, artistic-and-culturally-minded “Internet of Things” applications;
  • activities related to web and digital literacy, "creative coding", videogame making; (e.g. SCRATCH, Mozilla’s Hackasaurus, Processing, Arduino etc);
  • mobile apps
  1. Build quality is a key factor in the decision-making process. We are only able to invite physically robust and operationally reliable pieces that can support many thousands of interactions.
  2. Submissions containing elements of swearing, violence, intolerance towards or discrimination against anyone based on a protected ground as set forth in the Ontario Human Rights Code will not be considered.
  3. Innovation in digital media creation and interaction is a governing principle behind the curation of digiPlaySpace. Combined with the TIFF Learning goals of discovery, accessibility and media literacy, this exhibition:
    • Prioritizes the curation of installations made by innovative artists working in digital media (both in Canada and internationally);
    • Ensures every point of visitor interaction is inclusive and accessible for a variety of ages, abilities and learning styles of our 3-13 year old audience;
    • Encourages multi-user interaction and co-play between children and their parents or guardians;
    • Critically assesses and carefully integrates each interactive installation, videogame, mobile app, digital creative tool and activity into the exhibition as an overall visitor experience.

Terms & Conditions

  1. APPLICATION OF THESE TERMS & CONDITIONS
    (1) The following terms and conditions (the “Terms”) govern the submission of an Artwork (the “Artwork”) to Toronto International Film Festival Inc. (“TIFF”) for consideration for the 2017 digiPlaySpace exhibition (the “Exhibition”). To the extent that this document is inconsistent with any other document prepared by TIFF or anyone else, this document will take precedence. Any questions about these Terms should be directed to submissions@tiff.net. 
  2. SUBMISSION AGREEMENT
    By submitting an Artwork to TIFF for Exhibition consideration, the submitter (the “Applicant”) represents that he or she has obtained consent from any and all owners, creators, writers producers and/or other authorized representatives of the Artwork whose consent is required to submit the Artwork to TIFF (the “Artwork Owners”), and has read, understood and agreed to the Terms. TIFF may disqualify or reject, but is not required to do so, any submission that it determines in its sole discretion, is not in compliance, in whole or in part, with these Terms.
  3. SUBMISSION ELIGIBILITY
    Artworks that do not meet the eligibility requirements should not be submitted and will not be considered by TIFF. TIFF may accept late submissions at its discretion. To review eligibility requirements, please see above.
  4. SELECTION
    TIFF will consider for inclusion in the Exhibition all eligible Artworks that have been submitted by the above deadline and in accordance with these Terms. TIFF reserves the right to consider for inclusion in the Exhibition, and include in the Exhibition, Artworks received at any time and through any means, channel or process, including means, channels or processes other than those outlined in these Terms. Nothing in these Terms or otherwise requires TIFF to select for Exhibition inclusion any of the Artworks submitted through the process outlined in these Terms. All selection decisions are at the sole and absolute discretion of TIFF, and are final and unreviewable. TIFF is not required to provide any feedback, comments or reasons, or any other information, regarding the selection or non-selection of any submitted Artwork or the process by which Artwork are or have been selected. TIFF is not responsible or liable for its selection decisions; for the contents of any internal comments or feedback regarding the Artwork that are or may be obtained from the Applicant or anyone else; for any communications by any representative of TIFF relating to the Artwork or the Exhibition selection process; for the manner in which the Artwork shall be, is or was considered and reviewed; or for any failure on the part of the Exhibition to provide the Applicant or anyone else with information concerning TIFF’s consideration and/​or review of the Artwork. TIFF will provide all Applicants with an official decision regarding their artwork by the end of December 2016. TIFF will contact Applicants using the contact information provided in the registration form. Applicants are responsible to provide correct and functional contact information. TIFF is not responsible for any failed attempts to contact Applicants using the contact information provided.
  5. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, LEGAL CLAIMS AND INDEMNITIES
    By submitting the Artwork to TIFF, the Applicant and Artwork Owners (the “Submitting Parties”) hereby warrant and represent that: (i) the Artwork is wholly original and is not copied from and does not include any other work that is the subject of copyright or other protection, unless such work is in the public domain or the Submitting Parties have obtained any and all consents, releases, licenses, and other authorizations or waivers of any kind necessary for the inclusion or reproduction of any person, character, location, thing, trade-mark, sound recording, musical composition or other work in the Artwork; (ii) the Artwork does not defame any person or violate the common law or statutory rights, including, without limitation, the rights of privacy and publicity or any other right of any person; (iii) the Artwork is not the subject of litigation nor, within the knowledge of the Submitting Parties, is there any threat of litigation; (iv) there are no agreements, nor will there be any agreements made subsequent to the date of this Artwork submission that would or could have the effect of impairing the Submitting Parties’ ability to provide the Artwork as contemplated herein, or otherwise conflict with any provision of these Terms; and (iv) the Submitting Parties have the full right, power and authority to submit the Artwork to TIFF for Exhibition consideration, and to grant all of the rights granted hereunder and in the registration form, and there is no obligation or disability which would in any way impair, restrict or impede the Submitting Parties from fully performing all obligations pursuant to the submission and these Terms. The Submitting Parties agree to indemnify and hold harmless TIFF, its licensees, successors and assigns, and its and their members, officers, directors, employees, agents, representatives, associates and affiliates (each, a “Releasee”), from any claim, suit, action or other proceeding brought against a Releasee and from any losses, costs, or damages, including the Releasee’s full legal costs, which it may have suffered or incurred or may suffer or incur, directly or indirectly based on, in connection with, or arising from the use and exhibition of the Artwork submitted by the Applicant or the breach or alleged breach of any representation, warranty or other agreement made by the Applicant in these Terms. TIFF takes all reasonable anti-piracy precautions. While in TIFF’s possession, all Artworks are securely stored and regularly inventoried. Access to Artworks is limited to TIFF staff who require access in order to install or screen accepted submissions. No duplication and loaning of Artworks is permitted. By submitting an Artwork to TIFF, the Submitting Parties hereby release TIFF from any and all liability in the event of theft, unauthorized access or copying, or any breach of copyright of the submitted Artwork while it is in TIFF’s possession.

Submission Checklist

In order to successfully submit to digiPlaySpace, please ensure that you have fulfilled the following:

  1. Completed the Submission Form
  2. Where applicable, provide any technical requirements for presentation. Submissions do not need to include full technical specs for initial consideration; however TIFF will require full Technical Specs and Requirements for staging in a gallery prior to accepting any artworks. If it's still unfinished, at a prototype stage or is an original proposal, TIFF will consider the submission but please note that proven build quality (or proven reputation for staging physically robust and operationally reliable works) is a key factor in our decision making.
  3. Should you be informed directly that your artwork has been selected you will be required to submit publicity materials. A complete list of required materials will be sent to you at that time. Artists selected to participate will be notified before or around October 14, 2016. Artists not selected will be notified via email by December 31, 2016.
  4. SUBMITTING BY MAIL: To arrange submission of any physical materials or samples for consideration, please email: submissions@tiff.net with "digiPlaySpace submission" included in the subject heading. While submitting physical materials is not recommended, please note any materials must be sent prepaid. TIFF will not accept collect or cash-on-delivery shipments. TIFF will not assume responsibility for, nor will it accept, shipments incurring expenses for terminal charges, duties, taxes or customs brokerage. Clearly indicate on all waybills that transportation and customs charges be billed to the sender. Please Note: Any charges for shipping incurred by TIFF will be invoiced back to the sender. RETURN OF MATERIALS: Preview materials and product samples will not be returned unless prior arrangements have been confirmed with TIFF.

Prizing

As of June 2016, TIFF intends to administer a People’s Choice Award for favourite installation and People’s Choice Award for favourite app, as determined by attendees’ votes. At this time there are no cash values attached to these awards.
